Birmingham City striker has eyes on title after Wolves victory

Blues captain Carsley will, however, be banned from the next three matches for his tackle, which was deemed serious foul play and merited a straight red card.

O'Connor said: "Afterwards Carso wasn't saying too much about it, apart from 'sorry' to the boys. What can you do? You go in and you make the challenges. There wasn't any intention there to harm anyone. He's a true, honest player and it's hard to lose one of your best players in the team.

"But we picked ourselves up and we did the job we needed to do. We got the first goal at the right time and the second goal killed them."

O'Connor stressed that Blues would not get carried away, despite the natural high and euphoria last night's result produced.

"I think we are getting strong as a unit. We are getting players back who were injured. That's the best choice the gaffer can have, everyone is flying in training wanting to play.

"If we keep the full squad, the team spirit's there, and we don't get too over-confident about things and keep a level head, we will be fine I think. We can certainly go on and win this league."

Cameron Jerome edged Blues ahead with his third goal in as many games in first-half stoppage-time before O'Connor, his replacement, was tasked with the lone forward duty.

And he revealed he knew exactly what he was doing when he raced after a long pass by David Murphy.

"On the bench I was watching when we were playing the ball long and their defenders were always heading the ball back but sometimes weren't getting enough on it. As we only had one striker up front, I thought that maybe if I could chase the ball down I'd get a chance and thankfully I did.

"He [Christophe Berra] headed it short, I took it past the 'keeper and stuck it in.

"The 'keeper actually clipped my heel a little but, I was thinking about going down, but I managed to put it in. There was a little skid on the grass which helped it over.

"It was a great feeling. That closed the game up for us."
