Misery for Birmingham City

Terry Westley conceded that Blues simply didn’t live up to their potential in last night’s FA Youth Cup semi-final.

And the Academy manager insisted that his young charges would learn a harsh lesson after the 3-0 home defeat by Liverpool

“We needed the first goal so the players would really start to believe we would win,” he said.

“Instead they scored and two in particular were bad from our point of view.

“The first, from a corner, we should have cleared at the near post, but we mis-kicked it completely. The third one, the goalkeeper went to throw it, he hasn’t thrown it, and he dropped it and they scored.

“And if you do that to good players and good teams then you are in trouble. It’s one hell of a mountain to climb after that.”

Blues go to Anfield a week tonight for the second leg, which has become a ‘tall order’, said Westley, who was disappointed that the players appeared edgy at the outset.

“I think they were more than a little bit nervous, a big bit.

“But you have to cope with that. I don’t feel sorry for the players. I don’t come to you in the media afterwards and excuse them by saying ‘oh, they were nervous’ because it’s not a good enough answer.
