Birmingham City boss faces a 'happy problem'

Damien Johnson

Damien Johnson cannot be faulted for the way he has played since deputising for the suspended Lee Carsley, Alex McLeish has admitted.

The club captain has been absolutely dynamic after the team captain was handed a three-game ban for his sending-off against Wolves.

Carsley is available again, and McLeish faces a big decision - or a ‘happy problem’, as he calls it - over who to play alongside Lee Bowyer in Saturday’s crunch visit of Preston North End.

“I’m not about to name my team at the moment,” stated McLeish.

“Damien has done really well for us since he’s come in. The World Cup games for Northern Ireland honed his sharpness.

“He’s trained extra at times to keep himself right.

“He saw that maybe the door wasn’t opening for him too much as far the first team was concerned.
