Jordon Mutch prepares for the future at Birmingham City

Jordon Mutch has expressed relief at finally emerging from his injury nightmare - and the possible saving of his career.

The 17-year-old, who signed his first professional contract yesterday evening, vowed to be back for Blues better than ever.

Mutch was touted as the next big thing after making a stunning impact on Blues pre-season tour of Austria.

He became Blues second youngest ever debutant, after club legend Trevor Francis, aged 16 years and 268 days in the second-half of the Carling Cup tie at Southampton in August.

But then Mutch was struck down by growing pains, which caused fractures in both feet, and was confined to a wheelchair for three months.

Surgery has corrected the problem which is common in many adolescent sportsmen and sportswomen and Mutch can now look forward to a bright future as, indeed, can Blues, who at last tied him down to a 2 1/2 year contract.

Plenty of clubs were ready to make a pitch for Mutch as negotiations dragged on.

“It’s the first step of my football career and just the start of better things for me hopefully,” said Mutch, in his first interview.

“With the injury that I have had it has been frustrating, with the [Academy] team doing so well in the FA Youth Cup too. I am just looking forward to getting back next season.
