Birmingham City: Relive the drama of promotion day

FOR 2,000 fans in Reading, it was a moment they'd never forget. For thousands more logging on to the Birmingham Mail website, it was the time to celebrate with fellow Bluenoses online.

Birmingham City's promotion to the Premier League came down to the final day of the season - and in true fashion, it was nervy to right to the final whistle.

Colin Tattum and Andy Walker joined fans online to discuss the game as it happened - and here's what happened:

Reading v Birmingham City(05/03/2009)
12:45
David Higgerson:  Good afternoon and welcome to our coverage of Birmingham City's crucial game at Reading.
12:45
David Higgerson:  Kick off is at 1.15pm and Colin Tattum and Andy Walker will be joining us shortly.

Good afternoon everybody. Hopefully the last time we'll be meeting up this season. I've had less stressful birthdays than this one .......
12:47
[Comment From Blues09]
We are Doomed if any of our defence gets injured ! :(
12:47
[Comment From Jimlad]
2 draws would be hard on the nerves but would do
12:47
[Comment From Blues09]
Lets hope we do better then Ricky Hatton
12:47
Do you think today's result will be a
Blues win
 ( 69% )
Reading win
 ( 13% )
score draw
 ( 0% )
goal-less draw
 ( 19% )

12:47
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Afternoon all - it's the big one!!
12:48
[Comment From No Sugar In Mine Thanks]
Two up front shows positive intent, though.
12:48
[Comment From Jimlad]
Yes two best strkiers - no time formessing about
12:48
Andy Walker at the Madejski:
Blues - (4-4-2) - Maik Taylor; Carr, Jaidi, Martin Taylor, Traore; McFadden, Carsley, Johnson, Fahey; Phillips, Jerome. Subs: Doyle, Larsson, O'Connor, Bent, Bouazza
12:48
[Comment From Blues09]
AM to quite even if we go up? in the papers today
12:48
[Comment From Jimlad]
would have had Larson in tho
12:49
[Comment From b]

12:50
[Comment From Pete]
I'm insanely nervous.....
12:50
[Comment From Jimlad]
I'm nervously insane
12:50
David Higgerson:  Afternoon Andy!
12:51
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Afternoon all
12:51
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Reading - (4-3-3) - Hahnemann; Rosenior, Duberry, Bikey, Harding; Kebe, Karacan, Tabb; Hunt, Kitson, Long. Subs: Federici, Cisse, Gunnarsson, Matejovsky, Doyle.
12:51
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Well think it might be 4-3-3 for the Royals anyway.
12:51
[Comment From Pete]
Blues09, its a story started by Villa fans to put us off. Why else would anyone who cares about Blues start a story about McLeish leaving today of all days...?
12:51
[Comment From Blues09]
Come on Blues K.R.O
12:51
[Comment From burnsey]
guys. where can i find a place in birmingham thats showing the blues game? everywhere i know has the liverpool game on
12:52
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Queudrue doesn't make it, groin, Larsson shoulder not quite right. McFadden wide on right. Attacking bench - hardly any other players left!
12:52
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  They've got Ridgewell on TV again.
12:52
[Comment From Pete]
we need Tiny to have one of his good days today.. He's either immense or shocking.
12:53
[Comment From Blues09]
Kitson the danger man
12:53
David Higgerson:  Liam Ridgewell on Sky Sports: "Not a great match for us last week, terrible disappointment. We've been up there throughout the season and we believe we can get ourselves up."
12:54
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Re the 'Eck to go' regardless if Blues win or lose story.....he has not indicated what he will do, privately or publicly, nor have the board decided what to do. David Gold been on radio saying it is speculation. All depends on what division Blues are in and when he has a end of season meeting with the board. Nothing has been decided on his future yet, by him or the board.
12:54
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  It was just an easy story for a national journo to conjure up.
12:54
[Comment From Pete]
exactly Colin. It's just speculation aimed at trying to put us off.
12:54
[Comment From Blues09]
Tatts- Why are we wearing our last season 3rd kit?
12:55
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  The stadium starting to fill up here, Reading fans are in the possession of those now familiar clapper boards.
12:55
David Higgerson:  In answer to Burnsey - we'll have to pass on that one!
12:55
Colin Tattum with Blues:  It doesn't help, does it? If Blues end up in the play-offs then every question to the manager will be about his future during and in the fortnight to the final, should it come to that.
12:56
[Comment From No Sugar In Mine Thanks]
McLeish is a story nobody has gone out of their way to deny. Think the writing is on the wall.
12:56
[Comment From burnsey]
wheres the best place i can watch the game? my student halls have liverpool on. arghhhhhh. in birmingham by the way.
12:56
[Comment From Pete]
Reading are Blue and White so we can't wear either our home or away kit.. Its our 3rd kit
12:56
[Comment From Blues09]
Lets hope we can keep 11 players on the pitch
12:56
[Comment From Pete]
I think most Blues fans and the team have become quite hardened to the Media though. We always get the same treatment from them.....
12:56
Colin Tattum with Blues:  The current away kit - Ajax style - probably has too much white on it for the referee as Reading are in blue and white hoops
12:56
David Higgerson:  Trevor Francis: "Howard Webb is the best referre in the Premiership, but not in the Championship."
12:57
[Comment From No Sugar In Mine Thanks]
Howard Webb owes us.
12:58
Colin Tattum with Blues:  David Gold has denied the Eck story. This is not the time for it now anyway; it will all become clear once the dust has settled on this season, whenever it ends. As I said, no decision has been made on manager's future either way.
12:58
David Higgerson:  Ok, so moving on, score predictions folks?
12:58
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Some decent fancy dress costumes here today, apparently Jon McCarthy (ex-Blues winger turned BRMB pundit) spotted a giant snowman outside the ground earlier.
12:59
[Comment From No Sugar In Mine Thanks]
C'mon colin. Abandon the studied journalistic neutrality and give us a prediction for this afternoon.
12:59
[Comment From Rich]
2-1 Blues. Got to be positive guys.
1:00
[Comment From Pete]
2-1 blues

Can anyone tell me the best way to listen-watch etc this game. From Australia
1:02
[Comment From Stephen in New Orleans]
7am here in Louisiana USA and we're all up and ready for the big match
1:03
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Haven't a clue re score. Given up predicting after last weekend. I have a feeling a draw, and what that might mean...... Parnaby isn't fit.
1:03
David Higgerson:  McLeish: "It's an age-old cliche but I feel the players have reacted well to last well. Told them to pick themselves back up off the floor. There's a lot of experience in that dressing room and that will part of the key to success. We have players who shouldn't be fazed by this occasion. It's a one-off game and we have to treat it as such."
1:04
David Higgerson:  On Jerome and Phillips: "Jerome has been rotated but is looking sharp. Kevin has never been out of my thoughts. He would like to have played more, but injury put paid to that, but also a wee bit of sharpness, but he's an important player to us and has been all season."
1:04
[Comment From No Sugar In Mine Thanks]
Blimey. An American on time for once :-)
1:04

Guest, try www.myp2p.eu
1:04
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Blues have only been out of the top two for around seven weeks all season, and then no lower than third...........
1:05
Colin Tattum with Blues:  The pitch here actually looks quite decent....maybe it will cut up and bobbly like St Andrew's
1:05
[Comment From Dave in NYC]
one more desperately nervous bluenose stateside here, stephen
1:06
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  The stands are a sea of blue and white, as decent atmosphere as expected.
1:06
[Comment From Stephen in New Orleans]
Good morning Dave in NYC.. VERY nervous here, too!
1:06
David Higgerson:  Andy, what's your feeling for today?
1:06
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
Hi guys
1:06
[Comment From Jamie]
I'm scare...
1:06
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Here's an omen (I hope not) Four teams have beaten Blues at St Andrew's this season: Blackpool. Coventry, Reading and Preston.......and what have they all done to Blues on their own ground....?
1:07
David Higgerson:  Coppell: "It feels like a cup final. I won't be keeping tabs on Selhurst Park. There's been a lot of speculation about what will happen but it's not Neil Warnock's style to field an understrength side. Tonight one manager will be celebrating and two more looking forward to the playoffs."
1:07
[Comment From Blues09]
Our last back to back defeats, where against preston and reading!
1:07
[Comment From Rich]
Well, it's time to reverse our fortunes - eh Tatts.
1:07
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  David - Really don't know what to think, everybody gave up predicting in this division a long time ago. Absolutely nothing would surprise me.
1:08
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Yep, they have all beaten Blues on their own ground as well....apart from Reading....
1:09
[Comment From Blues09]
its like a home game for sheff utd!

Anyone else from SA?
1:16
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Tabb in central midfield for Reading, Hunt wide right, Kebe wide left
1:17
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Kebe been playing very well for Reading there, Carr likewise for Blues at right-back, good old tussle that
1:17
[Comment From john from sa]
come on the blues ... hello from cold gauteng
1:17
Colin Tattum with Blues:  McFadden wide right for Blues, Fahey left
1:19
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  I know it's early days but Traore does not look comfortable out there.
1:20
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Lots of nervous energy out there, both teams need to settle down

1:22
[Comment From john from sa]
hey nick whereabouts in joburg
1:23
David Higgerson:  First test for Hahnemann as Jerome chased after a long ball forward, before being knocked sideways by Duberry
1:24
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  I see Neil Warnock has put a strong Crystal Palace team out, that will keep the consipracy theorists quiet.
1:24
Colin Tattum with Blues:  The back pair, Duberry and Bikey, look very strong early on for Reading
1:25
[Comment From Sydney Bluenose]
we've got live commentary .... my Dad has put the phone by the radio!! KRO!!
1:25

Bit like Man U except that most of you will have been to birmingham at some point in your lives
1:27
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Swedish - Jaidi had a nightmare with Bikey at set-pieces the last time Blues were here.

1:35
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
superb goal from fahey!!!!!
1:35
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Jaidi obviously put Hahnemann off then which is why the American made faint claims for offside.
1:35
[Comment From Rich]
awesome. How much was Fahey?? Quality
1:35
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
quality
1:35
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Rich - £300,000
1:37
[Comment From Swedish in Hong Kong]
Robin Shroot came for less, some 20,000 right?
1:37
[Comment From Rich]
Money well spent.
1:37
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
got the ball on the left slide of the box and placed a low drive into the right corner.
1:37
[Comment From No Sugar In Mine Thanks]
Awful goalkeeping cock up, though. Replays show Jaidi was onside, which is what Hahnemann is whinging about to cover his embarrassment.
1:37
TwitterBCFC_News:  Reading 0, Birmingham City 1: Join the live match discussion at www.birminghammail.net/live #bcfc #bcfcpromotion
1:37
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  That goal was definitely not off-side, like I said, I think Jaidi's presence threw Hahnemann. Having looked to have scored the goal that sent Blues to the Premier Leaague last season, is this second time lucky for Fahey?
1:37
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
jaidi was not offside. just watched the replay
1:38
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Shroot was £10,000 or even a bit less, just a nominal 'goodwill' fee.
1:38
David Higgerson:  Offside flag goes up for Shane Long, maybe a yard offside, good straight line being held by the Blues defence there....
1:39
[Comment From Nick in Joburg]
Been waiting for a 4-0 result for Blues. Maybe this is it.
1:39
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Interestingly Shroot is ranked as Blues' third top scorer in today's programme with nine goals in nine. Obviously they've taken his goals for Harrow Borough into account.
1:39
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
hop Sheef U have heard already
1:39
[Comment From letsby avenue]
No another Preston please
1:39
[Comment From Swedish in Hong Kong]
And Shroot played Wolves and did it good. hope the club will keep and develop him.

Go the Blues
1:39
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
i see another gaol comin
1:39
[Comment From Gruffalo]
Excellent start! Listening to radio whilst I clean my barbecue. Oh the glamour...
1:40
David Higgerson:  Liam Ridgewell: "Ideal start for us. We deserve the lead but we need to get on top of this now. Got to make sure get through the first half. Fantastic goal, and great goal last week, good to see Fahey score again."
1:41
David Higgerson:  Stephen Hunt dangerous turn, flashed ball across Blues' goal, but Kitson can get to it in time.
1:41
[Comment From Swedish in Hong Kong]
It's a bit funny, when McLeish looked to Ireland for cheap quality his role model was Reading with Doyle and the Hunt Bros. And now Fahey has scored for us.
1:41
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Good point Swedish, McLeish is a big admirer of Fahey.
1:42
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
we havent concided a goal away from home for 300 mins
1:42
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Sorry folks, back on line now
1:42
[Comment From Gruffalo]
Anyone drunk yet?
1:43
[Comment From Swedish in Hong Kong]
Fahey is probably worth some 3-4 million now...
1:43
[Comment From Sydney Bluenose]
hope for 390 today!
1:43
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
yup
1:43
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Gruffalo - I'm sure one or two in the Blues end are.
1:44
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Blues goal came from nice skill from McFadden, teasing Harding, to get the corner. Just about kept out at near post by keeper under Jerome challenge then when ball recyled to back post Fahey tried his luck and in she went, although Hahnemann got both hands on it and probably should have kept it out
1:44
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
better spell fron R now
1:45
[Comment From Gruffalo]
Problems with the commodore 64 again Tatts. For future reference folks. Live blog works great on I-phone.

1:46
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Gruffalo - was wondering how you might be cleaning your BBQ with a laptop, that explains it all.
1:46
Colin Tattum with Blues:  McFadden carrying a threat cutting in from right with mazy dribbling....Blues defence holding firm, nothing daft from Tiny and Jaidi so far
1:46
[Comment From No Sugar In Mine Thanks]
I still think Howard Webb owes us a penalty
1:46
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  No Sugar - And an assist.
1:46
[Comment From Gruffalo]
Sorry Tatts. Forgot you were still on that old thing....
1:46
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Until now..Jaidi push on Long, left hand edge of box, he does that sort of thing too much
1:47
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]

Colin Tattum with Blues:  So when does the Blues sending-off come folks? lol
1:48

Look up to the sky and said OH MY GOD
1:50
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Swedish - he put his head back and mouthed 'Oh my god'.
1:50
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Afternoon Max
1:50
Colin Tattum with Blues:  It's all got a bit too frantic from Reading as they try to recover, Blues keeping wits about them, doing nothing silly - hope I'm not tempting fate.
1:51
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Blues fans starting up another chorus of 'Anarchy'.
1:51
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Good break after 1-2 between McFadden, Carr, rolls it back to Jerome, took a heavy touch inside area, Bikey swoops round the cover
1:52
[Comment From Swedish in Hong Kong]
Andy, could have been "Oh, my gold!"
1:52
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
think about it. r have to score twice
1:52
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Hunt and Kebe have switched wings for Reading, Kebe v Traore
1:52
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Kabe and Traore - both Mali internationals.
1:53
[Comment From Swedish in Hong Kong]
FAHEY!
1:53
[Comment From Sydney Bluenose]
Fahey to get a hattrick?
1:53
[Comment From brian fromSydney]
what do you think of the line up Blues are fielding today Tats and Andy
1:54
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
Johnson and Carr are imense
1:54
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Fine move from Blues following determined tackle by Jonty...Fahey carries ball, brilliant slaloming dribble, feeds Phillips right edge of box, shot into Hahnemann's legs
1:54
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Great footwork from Fahey there.
1:55
David Higgerson:  Plymouth 1, Barnsley 1. Charlton 3, Norwich 0 - looks like Norwich are going down for sure...
1:55
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Jaidi booked 39 blocking foul on Long
1:55
David Higgerson:  Biggest cheer for quite a while too!
1:55
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
reading pushing we can get one on the break
1:55
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
Sky says that we are good value for 1-0
1:55
[Comment From Swedish in Hong Kong]
We should have bought Stephen Carr years ago, I think Brucie tried... Hope he will stay, I think he still has a lot to give in the PL.
1:55
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Brian- I think that it is a line-up that McLeish didn't really have much choice in putting out. O'Connor has been struggling for form, Queudrue and Larsson are injured, Bowyer suspended. There wasn't a lot else he could go with.
1:55
[Comment From Rich]
That Jaidhi is a liability
1:56
[Comment From Gruffalo]
Few people this week said blues were a better team under pressure. Looks like they were right...
1:56
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]

1:56
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
bit silly eally
1:56
[Comment From new zealand blue]
putting me throu the ringer again
1:56
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Danger from free-kick, goes right across, misses Kitson and Duberry at back stick
1:56
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Jaidi does give away far too many needless fouls.

[Comment From Gruffalo]
Dave - who?
1:57
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Reading want to try and get down sides of Blues centre-halves, to get them turned and jumbled about.....first time it happened properly Jaidi fouled Long. Blues talked about this in the week and Eck demanded total concentration, players be alert and take better positions to stop it happening. Carsley and Johnson as the midfield shield help to that end

1:58
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Reading are finishing the half well.
1:59
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Interesting at defensive corners, Jaidi is the spare man inside six yard box. Don't want him to mark Bikey after last time. Working so far, clears another one there

2:01
[Comment From No Sugar In Mine Thanks]
I'd rather see Maik coming for some of these crosses rather than leaving them to the defenders
2:01
Colin Tattum with Blues:

Driven ball by Rosenior flashes across face of goal, crowd groan as no-one there to put it in. Reading piling on pressure as half comes to close

2:02
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Blues just need to ride this half out.
2:02
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  And they have

Whatever will happen in this match, I guess there will still be people who will discuss if McLeish is right or wrong for us.

2:13
[Comment From Swedish in Hong Kong]
For me, McLeish has done a lot of good for the club. But he has done mistakes. For me, the three clear ones are 1) not using the option of Palacios (14 million from Wigan to Tottenham), and 2) lending out Kelly when Parnaby was injured which forced him to put Larsson there and our right side midfield got weaker, and 3) just to use Zarate for 14 matches when we were in the PL.
2:13
[Comment From Max]
If by any chance they draw, what is the likelyhood of us still being promoted??
2:13
[Comment From Pete]
We cannot start the second half like we finished the first. We need to get the game back under control... I'd think about Larsson on for Phillips if its still 1-0 later on in the half
2:13
[Comment From martb90]
come on you blue boys.we can do this
2:15
[Comment From rj]
sydney bluenose try filmon via myp2p
2:15
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Swedish, hindsight is a wonderful thing. There are pros and cons to all of what you have said. Palacios was more circumstance than a major cock-up. Anyway, it's the here and now that matters. Blues are back out for their pre second period warm-up
2:15
[Comment From brian from Sydney]
God they will come at us like a freight train in the second half,,Please lets hold out ,lets have a bit of luck for once,

Newcastle two down. Michael Owen in for next season :-)
2:18
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
They can come at us and we can score on the break
2:18
[Comment From Pete]
we had luck with the goal and the fact that they didn't score when they should have. We need to get the game under control and chase everything 100% exactly like we did against Wolves.
2:18
[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
here we go again!!
2:18
[Comment From Simon (Melbourne)]
Come on Blues, please make it this time. Good to see so many Down Under Blues watching tonight

[Comment From North Carolina Brummie]
Coppell is looking twitchy
2:21
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Jerome cross for McFadden coming in, flashes wide of far post.....decent enough start
2:21
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Jaid done for heading the back of Kitson....no second yellow though....
2:21
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Jaidi has got to be careful, especially with no defensive cover on the bench.
2:22
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Jonty had a word with him, Jaidi on thin ice if he's not careful
2:22
[Comment From USA-Blues]
it would be nice to keep it 11 v 11
2:22
[Comment From johny r]
please please please come on blues KRO
2:23
[Comment From blue in sweden]
Hold this now, I want to celebrate tonight.
2:23
[Comment From Swedish in Hong Kong]
Our beloved Preston is leading, but Burnley is leading and Cardiff has 0-0 so still Preston is out of play-off.
2:23
[Comment From USA-Blues]
so......40mins of defending then
2:24
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  I notice the cameras are focusing on Kevin Doyle, would expect to see him at some point.
2:24
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Long at near post to Kitson ball, Jaidi sliding with him, wide....danger that Blues rest on laurels and sit back as they often have done this season
2:25
[Comment From Swedish in Hong Kong]
As a manager you may have wanted to change Jaidi to another central back but there is no one on the bench. Hope he won't get a second yellow and there will be another match with ten men ... i am worried about shane long, though ...
2:26
[Comment From USA-Blues]
we definitely need another goal (states obvious)
2:26
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Reading are creeping more and more into it.... Long is a danger I agree. Reading are inter-weaving their play better, Blues have got to break it up and make it a scrappy game
2:29
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Doyle is coming on
2:29
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Kevin not Colin of course
2:29
[Comment From blue in sweden]
You people who can see the game, is Blues only defending or are they try to kill the game?
2:29
[Comment From Swedish in Hong Kong]
Liverpool leading Newcastle 2-0. We really need to avoid Championship if Newcastle and Boro go down.
2:29
[Comment From Simon (Melbourne)]
Don't care now if we make it a boring game and we get a 2nd off Phillips' bum!
2:29
[Comment From No Sugar In Mine Thanks]

2:31
Andy Walker at the Madejski:  Any news from Selhurst?
2:31
Colin Tattum with Blues:  Blues have set in defend mode. Reading have gone to risk mode.
2:31
Colin Tattum with Blues:

David Higgerson:  Full time match report
Reading 1, Birmingham City 2
Kevin Phillips was the hero as his second-half winner sent Birmingham back to the Barclays Premier League.
Phillips, whose goals helped West Brom to promotion from the Coca-Cola Championship just 12 months ago, slotted his 14th of the season to claim the three points at the Madejski Stadium and condemn the hosts to a play-off with Burnley.
Alex McLeish's side went ahead when Marcus Hahnemann failed to gather Keith Fahey's low shot before Phillips made it 2-0 on the hour.
Substitute Marek Matejovsky hammered in a reply for Reading but they were unable to find an equaliser as the Blues celebrated a promotion they should have wrapped up weeks ago.
The Clarets will fancy their chances in the play-offs against Steve Coppell's side, who have now not won at home in eight attempts.
Reading's Jimmy Kebe had the first shot on target after a fine crossfield ball from Andre Bikey picked him out on the left of the area but his shot was straight at Maik Taylor in the Birmingham goal.
Phillips hooked an acrobatic effort wide after Reading made a hash of dealing with a long throw as McLeish's side began to press.
And the Blues had the lead in the 19th minute.
James McFadden took a corner which was cleared back to him and he drilled a second cross deep to the back post.
Phillips cushioned a header down to Fahey and, after cutting in from the left, the Irishman curled in a shot from the edge of the area which should have been gathered by Hahnemann but somehow squirmed through his grasp and over the line.
Shane Long flashed an effort wide at the start of the second period after good work from Dave Kitson before Coppell brought Matejovsky on in a bid to wrestle control of central midfield.
Top scorer Kevin Doyle was then also summoned from the bench despite not being fit after a knee injury as Coppell gambled on finding an equaliser.
But it was the visitors who struck the second goal in the 60th minute.
A throw found its way back to Fahey and he clipped an immaculate first-time pass to release Phillips, who was level with Michael Duberry.
The home side called in vain for an offside flag while Phillips showed some trademark composure to calmly roll the ball wide of the advancing Hahnemann and into the far corner.
That appeared to be that but Reading found a way back into the game with a goal just a minute later.
A set piece was brought under control at the back post by Kitson and he smuggled it back to Matejovsky on the edge of the area.
The Czech Republic international skillfully dummied inside one challenge before arrowing a right-footed shot past Taylor and into the bottom corner.
It was his first of the season but he was clearly in the mood as he went close to an equaliser with a rasping drive from 25 yards which forced Taylor to nervously beat the ball away.
Reading were now dominant but left themselves exposed to danger on the break and Birmingham substitute Garry O'Connor nearly settled the game with five minutes left when he broke from his own half and smashed a shot against the foot of the post.
The ball stayed out but it was the 2,000 visiting fans who were cheering at full-time as they joined Wolves in returning to the top flight.
