Defender boost for Birmingham City
CROCKED Liam Ridgewell has targeted a return to action before the year is out.
The Blues defender broke his leg on Easter Monday after a tackle by Plymouth Argyle’s Jamie Mackie and has had a metal rod inserted to support the shattered tibia.
Ridgewell’s loss will be a big blow to Blues in the Premier League as he had enjoyed an excellent season up to that fateful afternoon.
But he vowed that he would be back sooner than expected to help Blues in their top-flight quest.
“I’ve been told that from the time of the incident it should take about five or six months to make a recovery,” the vice-captain told the Birmingham Mail, speaking about his plight for the first time.
“The bone needs about three months to heal, then it’s another two months to get back fit, as long as there are no complications.
“So it should be somewhere around November, we will just have to wait and see.
“In my own mind, that’s what I’m looking at. I’m not a drinker, I don’t gain weight generally and I’m a fit person, so I believe I can get back quite quickly.
“It was a compound fracture of the tibia, not any other bone, and it didn’t break through the skin, so there was no risk of infection.
