Birmingham City take a risk on Benitez

DAVID Sullivan has admitted Blues have taken a gamble by breaking the club’s transfer record to land Christian Benitez.
Blues moved fast to get their man amid growing interest in the highly-rated Ecuador striker, who has penned a three-year deal subject to a medical in England next week.
The initial fee forked out, believed to be just over £6 million, was enough alone to top what Blues paid Liverpool for their previously most expensive player, Emile Heskey, in 2004.
Colin Tattum will be live online at 12pm tomorrow to discuss the latest Birmingham City events - including the small matter of a club record signing!
Given the understanding that Alex McLeish won’t have vast amounts of cash to play with this summer, the amount paid, which could rise substantially through various add-ons, goes to show just how highly Blues rate Benitez.
However, co-owner Sullivan has been quick to play down the sum that has been paid for the 23-year-old by insisting it’s nothing compared to some of the over-inflated Premier League price tags.
