The 23-year-old came tantalisingly close to a move to the Premier League with Wigan in January but the deal collapsed after he broke his leg in training.

However, Benitez finally looks set to taste life in the English top flight as Blues hope that their club transfer fee record-breaker will be the man to spearhead their bid for survival next season.

And as the South American goal-getter prepared to bid an emotional farewell to Santos Laguna, who recently finished ninth in the Mexican Primera Division, he has expressed his delight at being given the chance to compete in arguably the world’s toughest league.

“It’s a very competitive league and I’m going there, it’s a nice dream for me and thank God,” said Benitez, who bagged 31 goals in 58 games for Santos Laguna, who are nicknamed the Warriors.

“Now I have to think fast to adapt and succeed, I can not be more grateful to the people of Laguna and I’m very happy with this new challenge.
