Birmingham's Christian Benitez deal could be a 'Dugarry', says Mooney

“For a club like Birmingham going up into the Premier League they know that they are going to concede goals so they have to find somebody who can score goals and to do it (the Benitez deal) so early in the summer is a bold move.

“It’s surprising that they are spending money already, it’s usually when the players get back in July for pre-season training that clubs start getting their money out, so moving early may prove to be a big advantage.

“Usually when a team gets promoted you expect them to go for players with Premier League experience but this guy has not played in this country so he will be something of an unknown quantity, which could help.

“The board will certainly be hoping that, at that large expense, Benitez will be as successful as Dugarry was.”

n Mooney will be making his Blues debut at the Screwfix Midlands Masters Cup 2009 at the NIA on June 13 (KO 8pm).
