Birmingham City's David Sullivan is thrilled by the arrival of Christian Benitez

Christian Benitez

CHRISTIAN Benitez is set to complete his record signing early next week when he is due in Birmingham for his medical.

And the Ecuadorian striker, who cost an initial £6.2 million, rising to more than £9 million, could be ‘absolutely anything’.

David Sullivan admitted he was excited by the 23-year-old’s capture. “It’s still a bit of a punt, a gamble, on someone his age,” said the co-owner.

“He could be absolutely anything. But from what we’ve seen and what we’ve heard, we’re excited.

“He’s got a decent international goalscoring record and what’s attractive is that his goal to game ratio is improving, it was far better this season than it was last.

“I’m told he’s also the sort of player who will chase anything, he will go after hopeless cases to try and make something happen in order to get a result.

“He’s quite slightly built and we will have to make sure we get balls on the floor to him.

“But he’s strong with it, he’s a tough little character and we believe he can be a real threat to defences in the Premier League.”

Benitez has netted ten times for his country in 17 outings and registered 31 goals in 58 games for his Mexican club, Santos Laguna.
