Birmingham City signing is 'captain material'

“He’s also a threat in the opposition area at set-pieces and corners.

“I think the fans at Blues will take to him. The bottom line is that they love players who give their all and he will win tackles and headers galore.”

At one stage last season Cardiff were well placed to overhaul Blues with a host of games in hand.

They did boast the fewest number of losses (Blues ended with that proud record) and long unbeaten runs fired promotion hopes.

But they fell short, a stunning 6-0 loss at Preston North End signalling the end.

It meant that their best players were always going to be targets, which Capaldi accepted.

“We spoke about it at the end of the season and we expected two or three to do,” said Capaldi.

“Roger, Joe Ledley were favourites but I think now with Roger being sold Ross McCormack might sign a new contract.”

Capaldi, 27, suffered a miserable season just gone. Injuries to his knee and Mark Kennedy’s form meant he made only three Championship appearances.

He felt he didn’t get a fair chance, and had a meeting with manager Dave Jones’s at the campaign’s end.

“I couldn’t have had a worse season,” Capaldi, a near ever-present and FA Cup finalist in 2008 said.

“Me and the gaffer sat down and spoke for about half-an-hour and he assured me that when we came back everyone would have a clean slate.

“I will be working hard to get my place back but if it doesn’t happen I’d rather go somewhere, even drop a division, for regular football than just be a squad player.”
