Gary McSheffrey to get Birmingham City career back on track
“I didn’t have a good goalscoring season in the Premiership but I did the job required for me and the team.
"We were very defensive and the big onus was on keeping two banks of four and keeping it solid and I have never really played that way in my life.
“Anyone that knows me knows that I am probably one of the worst defenders you will come across, but you have got to be there and fill gaps and look like you know what you are doing. And I think my knowledge of the game as a left midfielder from that season in the Premiership really improved that side of my game and I feel that I know the position inside out now.
“It is just a case of having another crack this year and hopefully we can stay up, for one, and personally that I can have a decent season.”
Having been out on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, there have been question marks about McSheffrey's future with Blues, but he remains determined to prove his worth.
“I don’t know what will happen,” said McSheffrey, who also attracted attention from Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town. “In my opinion it is up to managers to keep players in the picture and if someone is not in their plans then I would personally like to be told.
"There were a couple of times at Coventry when I wasn’t featuring, once under Gary McAllister, but to be fair to him he pulled me in the office and told me I wasn’t going to be a big part of his plans and that if I wanted to I could go.
“So it has happened before to me and I have come through it and had a good career since then, so I will see what happens. I have had no contact over the summer. I have seen the manager a couple of times and just had a chat, nothing about my future, just general chit-chat about holidays.
“If I am fit and feeling good and my knee is feeling good then that left midfield position should be mine at that football club, in my opinion.”
