King Kev: Birmingham City will beat the drop!

Kevin Phillips

KEVIN Phillips today insisted that Blues had what it takes to maintain their Premier League status this season.

The bookmakers have Blues down to be relegated – along with Burnley and Hull – and the club’s last two forays in the top-flight have ended in the drop.

But the veteran striker said Blues should not be written off, and added that the opening match at Manchester United was no bad thing.

“We’ve got the players here, look at the names,” said Phillips. “I’m sure the manager is looking at another couple of additions as well, and I think he needs that.

“We’ve definitely got the players it’s just about trying to find that formation, that consistency, and settling down, which I’m sure will happen.

“For me, the first game of the season is a good start for us. Everyone says ‘ohh, Manchester United away’ but I’d rather it be that than Wolves at home because the pressure would then be straight on you.

“We go to Old Trafford and there’s no pressure on us, no-one is going to give us hope in hell’s chance. Newcastle went there last year and nicked a 1-1 draw, Reading the year before as well.
