And the outgoing Blues power predicted that the Hong Kong millionaire and his group would ‘throw money at it’ to a degree that the current board couldn’t.

Sullivan said the plans Yeung had outlined to him were ‘exciting’, and all at Blues felt sure he was the right man to sell the club to.

“For a start, he’s come up with a huge amount of money for shareholders,’’ he said.

“People who had shares when we first came found they were worthless. Now, they are £1-a-share, double in value from when we floated or four times their value when we had a rights issue at 25p.

“Probably more than any other football club, we have delivered value to our shareholders and as chairman of the plc, it’s my duty to do that.

“The very fact he’s put up that level of money shows a massive commitment.

“Even the other day he was prepared to put £4million-£5million in to buy a player in the window but was prohibited to do so by Hong Kong Stock Exchange rules.

“But clearly he has more money to put into the club, which is what the fans want.

“And I cannot believe he’s come this far not to spend £10million or £20million on players in the January window.

“I don’t think for one moment he’s going to spend a couple of hundred million. He’s not the owners of Manchester City.
