Sunderland v Birmingham City: McLeish won't rush youngsters

Ashley Sammons

ALEX McLeish has revealed that he won’t promote Academy graduates to the first team squad for the sake of it.

Ashley Sammons, 17, is set to make his debut tonight in the Carling Cup at Sunderland, having being named to the substitutes bench at Hull City on Saturday.

And Dan Preston, an Academy scholar, is also in the party tonight, as defensive cover.

McLeish’s hand has been forced to a degree because of a crippling injury list, but he stressed that Sammons, a first year professional, had been edging closer to a squad number.

“There’s a chance for Ashley, he may well be making his debut,” said McLeish.
