Birmingham City: McLeish is calling on fan power

Alex McLeish

Could McLeish, with up to £40 million at his disposal this January, take a leaf out of their book?

He said: “We all aspire to be able to be playing in front of full houses and bring in players of a calibre who are going to not only keep you in the Premier League, but take you up the Premier League.

“These are all steps, and we’re brick-building here at the moment. I’m aware that we can’t just do something like that overnight.

“I’ve been fire-fighting a wee bit the last couple of years and we’re back in the Premier League, and we have to make the most of it.”

But before McLeish or anyone gets ahead of themselves, or gets too wrapped-up in Bruce’s return and Yeung’s first home game since the £81.5 million takeover, Blues have to take care of the business that matters.

They are on their worst run of form since just before Bruce left.

They have lost three straight games in the Premier League and six out of seven in all competitions.

McLeish said: “So far, in eight of the nine games, I don’t think we’ve played badly. Burnley was the only one I felt we didn’t do ourselves justice.

“The other eight we’ve not had the return of points we should have had.

“But we are where we are and yes, we have to get points on the board. I have said that home games keep you in the Premier League, and we have to start winning them.

“We’ve lost the last two at St Andrew’s and although they were games we shouldn’t have lost, we lost them and therefore we have got to maybe look at things a little bit differently in the search for the goals.”
