Carr: Anything above 17th would be a bonus for Birmingham City

Stephen Carr

STEPHEN Carr has reiterated that anything above a 17th place finish this season will be a bonus for Blues - despite the club’s ambitious spending plans.

After a run of three straight league defeats, encouraging displays against Sunderland and Manchester City, that yielded four points from six, have given Blues renewed optimism.

That form coupled with owner Carson Yeung’s pledge to hand boss Alex McLeish substantial funds in January means that Bluenoses can dare to dream.

However vice-captain Carr, a consistent performer ar right-back this season, has warned his team-mates not to get carried away amid the current buzz at St Andrew’s.

The Irishman has stressed that Premier League survival is the sole priority - nothing more, nothing less.

“At the moment we’re a club that’s just come into the Premier League and our main objective is to stay up, anything else is a bonus,” insisted the 33-year-old.

“If we came fourth from bottom I’d happily settle for that. The first year is very hard. This club has been going up and down over the last few years and it needs some stability of staying in the Premier League.

“With the new owners and their financial backing, hopefully we can move on from there. To me it would be a big accomplishment if this club stays in the division because we haven’t spent that much money at the end of the day.
