“I think Liverpool look like they have a little bit,” said McSheffrey. “But the top three are still something special.
“Chelsea are coming to our place over Christmas and we have been to Arsenal and Manchester United already.
‘‘We’ve played well in both those latter games but we did lose to them.
“They are the sort of teams who can still grind out a win when they’ve had poor games. But they have got such quality.
“The top three are out on their own at the minute.”
Blues, who take on Fulham at St Andrew’s on Saturday, have suggested recently they are ready to climb the table.
And ridding themselves of the yo-yo tag is the prime requirement as a longer-term goal.
“It is possible this year that we can do that, definitely,” said McSheffrey.
“We are certainly not among the worst three teams in the league but I felt we weren’t in the last season we went down either [2007-08].
“But we were relegated because we just didn’t get the points on the board. Ultimately, the league table doesn’t lie, does it?
“So far, 12 games, 12 points, it’s not too bad. The last three games are the sort of performances we have to produce consistently to be at that level we want to be.”
McSheffrey continued: “We went on a run where we were playing okay but didn’t always get the results.
“Burnley was a bad game. The last three have been decent. We should have taken nine points really.
“We got done with a penalty at Liverpool. They played well but they didn’t really create a lot of chances.
“Man City we should have won at home and obviously we beat Sunderland. So it could have been nine points from three games.
“Before that we were pretty mediocre but we are going in the right direction now.”
