“I’ve had a rubbish year with injury. I was determined this season I’d get a fresh start, there’d be a clean slate,’’ he added.

“I still feel I have got a lot to offer. It’s getting that chance.

“I was injured a lot last season but at the same time I look at things in a different way now.

“It was sort of almost like a rest year, I got refreshed, and now I’m determined to kick on again and get my career back on track.

“Obviously I’d like to do that here but if that’s not the case – and it’s not really looking the case, because I’m still available for transfer – then I have to consider my options.

“But things can change, people’s opinions can change, so I’m sure if I started doing the business then maybe I wouldn’t be up for sale.

“At the minute I’ve got to stay fit, work hard and try and play as many games as I can.

“Look after number one, because I’ve got to sort my future and career out.” McSheffrey, who has interested Championship clubs keen for a loan, has not had further talks with Alex McLeish about what’s in store. His contract expires in the summer, but Blues hold a two-year option.

“I haven’t had a chat with the manager. I have put my head down and worked hard,’’ said McSheffrey. “I’m training hard and have been getting a few appearances, so that’s better than nothing.”
