Birmingham City: Injured David Murphy confident of winning place back in to side

IMPENDING arrivals, a centre-back who has turned into a left-back and a Frenchman still with a point to prove ... With no clear end to his knee injury problems, David Murphy would be right to be worried about slipping down the pecking order at St Andrew’s.

Liam Ridgewell appears to have found himself a new role in defence, summer signing Gregory Vignal is still waiting to stamp his mark on the Blues team while there’s the small matter of cash to be spent in January.

However, there’s nothing Murphy, sidelined with a fractured kneecap sustained in April, can add to the fight for Blues’ left-back berth.

“Am I worried? Not particularly, because I think you’ve got to have confidence in your ability,” said Murphy, when asked if he fears he may have fallen out of Alex McLeish’s first-team picture.

“I feel that once I’m fully fit, then I’ll be pushing for a place. So I’m not too worried about that,” he said.

“We are quite a thin squad so I’m sure he will be looking to bring in targets.

“But all I can concentrate on is getting myself in the best physical condition so the gaffer can’t leave me out.”

As for Ridgewell, a centre-back by trade, who looks to have made the left side of defence his own, Murphy added: “He’s been great, for a centre-half.

“Ridge is a good lad, he’s a fit boy and I think he’s adapted to that situation just fine.

“Gregory hasn’t had the chance to play much either because of injury.”
