MANAGER Alex McLeish said there were a number of factors behind the recent Blues upsurge and he admitted that the optimistic mood surrounding the club was a help.

“There’s not one single thing,” mused McLeish.

“There’s new players, players adapting to the Premier League and learning from mistakes quickly and developing as players at this level. “There’s good quality players, some of whom also have experience and know-how, plus a great strength of character in that dressing room.

“The new owners have come in and pledged some money. I think there’s a feelgood factor.

“I believe I can feel a surge from the fans.

‘‘Maybe not quite at that level when I saw them at St Andrew’s all those years ago but I believe there is a much better feeling among them.

‘‘I don’t want to make it look as if it’s a slur on the previous owners. I think it’s just a case of familiarity breeds contempt sometimes and that’s why they got a bit fed up and brassed off.

“They now see change. What’s the phrase? A change is as good as a rest?

‘‘The fans have been brighter – especially since I went back to 4-4-2!”
