Stud Marks: Birmingham City manager has advice for player bust ups

BUST-UPS between manager and players, as recent incidents have shown, are not uncommon in the highly-charged world of football.

But you’ve got to remember to pick on someone your own size, reckons Alex McLeish.

Now, the Blues boss cuts an imposing figure. Not for nothing is he known as Big Eck.

Yet he remembers the time he realised he might have bitten off more than he could chew during a disagreement with a Motherwell player, Brian Martin, when he was manager there.

“I’m not saying it happens every day, but on an occasion sometimes people can lose their temper and that can include the manager.

“I have done it myself. I picked on one of the biggest guys in the team at Motherwell once until I came to my senses and realised what I was doing.

“I had him by the throat. I thought ‘wait a minute, he’s bigger than me’.

“You can lose it like that sometimes. You’ve just got to try and maintain a bit of cool. Sometimes it’s difficult. We’ve all been there.”
