Birmingham City star Ferguson plays down match with old club Blackburn

BARRY Ferguson insisted tonight’s game against his only other English club had nothing extra special attached for him personally.

Ferguson made 38 appearances for Rovers after signing for £7.5 million from Rangers in 2003. But he fractured his kneecap and after regaining fitness rejoined the Glasgow giants.

Some Rovers fans grumble about his departure, but Ferguson felt he didn’t really have to explain himself, nor did he have anything to prove.

“It is just another game,” he said. “I had two years at Blackburn and enjoyed myself there but I am enjoying myself at Birmingham.

“The last six months of my time up the road [at Rangers] was not the most enjoyable but I am back to enjoying football and playing every game.

“A lot of people said I didn’t enjoy my time there at Blackburn. I loved my time at Blackburn.

“I grew up a Rangers fan and, when your former club comes back in for you, I made the decision to go back up the road to Ibrox.”

Ferguson stressed Blues didn’t already believe they were free from a relegation battle this season.

“No, that is not the way we are thinking. The gaffer makes sure of that and all the experienced boys in the dressing room make sure of that.

“We’re on 24 points, we’re on a good run but we’re not getting carried away.

“The way we’ve played this season, we’ve probably surprised a lot of teams. We got a great three points on Saturday and now we look forward to Blackburn.

“I think what we’ve done so far is all down to hard work. Everyone fights for each other and that is the type of spirit we’ve got now.”
