CRAIG Gardner said Blues weren’t so much a topic of conversation at Villa, but the rest of the Premier League.

He made the switch in a £3.5 million deal from across the city, knowing that Blues have received new-found respect.

Not that they chatted directly about the challenge of Alex McLeish’s men at Bodymoor Heath. But they know not to take them lightly now.

“I think the whole Premiership is talking about Blues,” said Gardner.

“You look at the table, eighth place and only just come up from the Championship.

“People didn’t think Blues were going to do that but they’ve hit the ground running.”

Gardner truly believes he is joining the club he supported as a boy just at the right time.

But he said he didn’t simply expect to waltz into the starting line-up.

“You can’t expect to walk straight in. But I will be working hard in training to get my chance and when I do, hopefully I will take it and stay in the team.”

Recently Gardner bumped into a man who has gone down in Blues folklore, and is another local boy made good – Darren Carter.

He and his family watched him sweep in the winning penalty in the play-off shoot-out against Norwich City that brought Blues back to the top-flight after a 16-year absence.

“I was there when Darren Carter scored the winning goal to get us into the Premiership.

“I saw him the other day and spoke to him and he said this would be a brilliant move for me.

“I just can’t wait to get out there and put on the shirt of the club I support. I always give 110 per cent, for Blues 150 per cent.”
