Birmingham City: Why Damien Johnson didn't want to be Blues' captain flash
Feb 6 2010 by Colin Tattum, Birmingham Mail
IT’S fair to say that Damien Johnson was a reluctant Blues captain.
He said it was an ‘honour’ to do the job, but it wasn’t really his bag.
Determined, aggressive and single-minded on the pitch, Johnson was quiet and retiring off it.
During his eight years at Blues, he was hardly a showy, Robbie Savage style leader or figure.
“I didn’t want to be that type, do all the television stuff and interviews,” he said.
“I was never one for Sky Sports. I kind of liked the quiet life and just wanted to get on with my football.
“I know I probably brought things on myself with some of the bits and pieces that I did.
“And perhaps people may not have always understood me because I was quite low profile.
“Don’t get me wrong, I feel really privileged to have been captain of Birmingham.
“And I always felt appreciated by the important people like the lads, managers and coaches. That meant more as opposed to tons of adulation.”
Johnson was often described by Steve Bruce as probably his best pound for pound signing ever.
