The midfielder was an inspired £50,000 purchase from Blackburn Rovers reserves in March 2002.

Johnson smiled: “Brucie always liked a good sound bite!

“I took all that with a pinch of salt.

‘‘He was good to me, so was Eric Black. I enjoyed playing my football for them.

“I think that was just the way he was with everyone, when he said such things to the press.”

Johnson was told he would not be offered a new contract several weeks ago, so a transfer was always likely.

“I’ve not played a lot the last couple of years, had I stayed and waited to see what was around in the summer I would have been sitting on the bench and in the reserves, which I didn’t fancy more of.”
