Nikola Zigic edges closer to Birmingham City

NIKOLA Zigic was today a step closer to becoming Birmingham City's second major signing of the summer.

A fee of around £6 million has been agreed with Valencia and the Serbia star was due to undergo a medical in Birmingham.

As revealed in Monday’s Birmingham Mail, Blues made the 6ft 8in striker a top target and are keen to push matters through before the World Cup finals start.

Blues have trailed Zigic for several weeks, yet the efficiency and speed of their work has nonetheless caught rival clubs by surprise.

Valencia have terrible financial problems and were prepared to accept a knock-down fee for the player who cost them about £15 million three years ago.

Alex McLeish has already snapped up Ben Foster from Manchester United for £6 million and the likely addition of 29-year-old Zigic would again show a firm statement of intent for next season.

Cameron Jerome, meanwhile, has applauded McLeish’s intention to boost Blues’ goalpower – and keep Kevin Phillips at the club.

The team’s top-scorer said that Super Kev would again be an asset to them next season.

Big Eck has offered Phillips a new contract, as his present agreement expires this summer.

Even though he is almost 37, Phillips would cut it at Premier League level once more, Jerome insisted. He said: “Kev is a quality player, it would be good to have him back again.
