Vico Hui says it could be three years until Birmingham City are a household name in China

Vico Hui

VICO Hui today revealed that Blues were on a ‘mission’ to win over the Chinese people.

And the chairman cautioned that achieving the stated goal for Blues – who came from behind to win 3-2 against MK Dons in their latest friendly last night – to become one of the most popular clubs in the People’s Republic would not happen overnight.

The bid to buy Liverpool by Chinese sports entrepreneur Kenny Huang could steal much of Blues thunder, should it be accepted.

Liverpool’s storied history, world stars and European trophies already put them at an advantage over Blues in the Far East.

And Huang, who has a stake in the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers, appears to be backed by a sovereign wealth fund and has influence and contacts in Chinese government and business.

But Hui insisted that Blues’ pre-season tour was a good start in spreading the Blues word and developing commercial opportunities.

“I think it’s a mission,” he told the Birmingham Mail. “We have the passion – not only for the business – but the football.

“We are trying to let the people know the tradition of Birmingham and the Premier League, and the spirit of Birmingham.

“It was a wonderful trip. Now more Chinese people know more about Birmingham. I got a lot of positive feedback, so I think it was an amazing tour.

“Right now, China is a very big market. Talking about the commercial element, we will continue to promote the club in China and build a considerable fan base there.

“I really do think that Birmingham will go bigger and stronger in the future. It takes time, of course. We are not a Manchester United, Liverpool, OK?
