David Murphy says Birmingham City rue not seeing off Aston Villa

DAVID Murphy thinks Blues should have been awarded a penalty and declared they were dejected not to have put the derby to bed.

After going ahead through Roger Johnson’s goal, James Collins struck back with 17 minutes to go to level matters at St Andrew’s.

“We were certainly disappointed to have conceded that goal,” said Murphy.

“We were looking to push on and get a second one to kill the game off. Unfortunately it didn’t happen.

“We have been drawing too many games this season, not turning them into victories.

“We started the game very sloppy. To be fair, they could have been two up after ten minutes – we rode our luck a little bit.

“But then we came into it. We passed the ball a bit better and we created chances.

“We tried to put our game on to them and late in the first half and early in the second half we did that.

“We look a good team when we start passing the ball and we did that quite well. There is room for improvement, but it was better.”

Murphy said he couldn’t understand why referee Mark Clattenburg didn’t award Blues a 38th-minute penalty after the left-back tangled with Marc Albrighton.

“I certainly got a nudge in the back. I tried to stay up. I went down, tried to get back up again. What are you supposed to do in those situations?
