Barry Ferguson on the magic of Birmingham City in the Carling Cup final

BARRY Ferguson won everything going in Scotland, and was close to European glory with Rangers.

But not for one moment is the Blues midfielder blasé about the Carling Cup final.

If anything, it is that much more special for the 33-year-old.

When Ferguson decided to end his Ibrox association and get his teeth into a new task, in a different environment, little did he imagine he would be walking out at Wembley.

He said: “My mates have all been asking me ‘is it up there’? And it certainly is, with everything I have achieved, even getting to the UEFA Cup final.

“Birmingham’s a club that has not been in a major final for nearly 50 years.

“I’m not taking that away from my time at Rangers, but you are expected to win every single game up in Scotland, if not win the league, win one of the cups.

“But down here, a good achievement is just to stay in the Premier League.

“For us to get to the Carling Cup final, when a lot of the teams have played their strongest line-ups, has been a great achievement.

“Lifting the cup? Of course I’ve thought about it.

“But if I’m being honest, when I came down to Birmingham it’s not something I’d imagined, getting into a final.

“No disrespect, but Birmingham aren’t the biggest of clubs and are not expected to reach a final.
