Jordon Mutch earns trust of Alex McLeish at Birmingham City

ALEX McLeish has admitted that he can ‘trust’ Jordon Mutch not to let Birmingham City down during the remainder of the season.

After a difficult Premier League debut in the 5-0 biffing at Manchester United, Mutch returned to action for Blues at Everton this week.

And the 19-year-old performed with considerable aplomb, setting up Jean Beausejour’s goal.

Watford wanted Mutch back on loan but with Blues current injury list and fatigue in the ranks, McLeish has turned to Mutch.

“He had a good game. Made the goal. A nice chip into Jean and he had to go against some experienced players in midfield.

“I know Jack Rodwell was in there but he has got a lot more experience than Jordon at the top level and Jordon didn’t look out of place.”

McLeish continued: “Watford were still looking to get him back and Malky Mackay has done some great work with Jordon.

“We appreciate he’s added a a few different parts to his game that perhaps he never knew he had.

“Against Everton he played a very disciplined role for us, and gave a really mature performance in such a vital game.”

When Mutch first burst onto the scene as a 16-year-old, he strength as a box-to-box midfielder were apparent.

But he also has the nous to adapt to a more reserved role, as he did in the FA Cup at Millwall and at Goodison Park where, in the second-half notably, he helped protect the back four by sitting deeper.
