Birmingham City: David Murphy lays down FA Cup law

DAVID Murphy has warned Bolton Wanderers that Blues’ focus on the FA Cup is every bit as fixed as it was on the Carling Cup.

The teams clash at St Andrew’s today (12.45pm) and Murphy insisted Blues were taking another tilt at Wembley glory seriously.

A place in the FA Cup semi-finals is at stake – a stage of the competition last reached by Blues in 1975 – and Alex McLeish’s men would go all-out for victory.

Several key players could be missing from the line-up, but that was no deterrent to Blues’ attitude, Murphy stressed.

“This game, it’s another massive one for the club,” he said.

“To reach another major semi-final, with the chance of the final after that, would be a great achievement for the club, the fans and the players.

“We’re certainly 100 per cent focused on this game.

“The FA Cup is one of the major competitions in the world. Everyone watches it and to play in an FA Cup final would be fantastic, but we know we’ve got a very tough game against Bolton.

“We’ve got some injuries, but that’s what you’ve got a squad for. Every club in the league has injury problems and we’re no different. The boys who come in, I am sure they will do well.”

McLeish and the players, plus Murphy, have admitted that Premier League survival is the priority this season.

But the Carling Cup triumph and the incredible high it brought has whetted the appetite for more of the same – the relegation scrap can wait another week.

“We know it is going to be difficult but we are all up for it,” said the defender, who has been something of a goalscoring talisman in the FA Cup for Blues this season.

“The management team would have done the research on Bolton and we see the Premier League highlights.

“We know everything about them, so we will be set up to win the game.”

Murphy scored a delightful curled free-kick in Blues’ 4-1 win at Millwall in the third round.
