LIAM Ridgewell today insisted Blues would survive the great Premier League relegation scrap.
Blues sank to second from bottom in the table after defeat at Wigan Athletic, throwing away the early lead given to them by the left-back.
But Ridgewell said he was confident Blues would get the results they needed when the action gets under way again after the break for internationals.
“All I can say is that this is madness, this league, absolutely crazy,” he said.
“I have never known a league to be like it is. Everyone seems to be winning when you don’t think they will, and it clogs things back up.
“As long as it’s in our hands, that’s the main thing.
“When we got relegated last time [in 2008] it wasn’t in our hands, so we have got to make sure it is now.
“We know we are good enough to stay in the league, we have got to believe in ourselves.
“It is about showing it and doing it, though – but I’m sure we will stay up.”
Ridgewell added: “We have got to keep working hard. At Wigan, we desperately wanted to get the win, and we have done well in games when it’s been like that before – you saw it in the Carling Cup final against Arsenal, at West Ham.
“We have got to get back to that, to making sure we get the results in the important games, and then we should stay in the Premier League.”
Alex McLeish was as scathing as he has been in a long time about the way Blues allowed Wigan to recover to win 2-1.
Had Blues maintained their lead, it would have been a hammer blow to their chances of staying up.
Ridgewell said bad mistakes proved costly and had to be eradicated.
This season there have been a catalogue of soft goals conceded.
“We felt we were in control. Once we got the goal we thought we could build on it, but sadly we weren’t able to.
“Their equaliser was a crappy little goal we let in – another crappy little goal – and it put is on the back foot when we should have been on the front foot and going forward.
