Birmingham City's Kevin Phillips not calling time on career just yet

Kevin Phillips opened the scoring

KEVIN Phillips said it was ‘daft’ of any footballer not to try and extend his career for as long as possible.

Still going strong at the age of 37, Phillips said he was still enjoying the game as much as ever.

“Why would I want to retire at 36, 37, hang my boots up and that’s it? Yes, I enjoy the media side of it, the career I’m starting to build,” said Phillips.

“But there’s nothing better than going out on a Saturday and scoring a goal, getting a few headlines. I’d forgotten what it was like before last weekend; it’s a fantastic feeling.

“I think if you’re 30 and you’re not looking after yourself then you’re daft because the rewards are great.

“You can keep on earning good money, but it’s not about money really – classic example, I’ve just won a major medal.

“Look after yourself and these things are still there to be had.”

Phillips admitted he had to stay strong when he was warming the bench this season.

On 14 occasions he has been an unused substitute in the Premier League.

In three cup starts, he scored on each occasion. That was his fill.

“You have just got to be as professional as you can. I like to think I have done that throughout my career, otherwise I wouldn’t be talking about me still playing.

“It helps that you have got a good bunch of lads, as we have at Blues. And people keep telling me to play as long as a I can, so that’s what’s driving me.

“I think the main thing is that I still enjoy it. The desire’s still there. When that goes it’s time to call it a day.”
