SHE’S the local hero who has returned to spearhead Blues’ assault on the new Women’s Super League.
And England international Karen Carney is the competition’s marquee name.
But Carney admits she’s nervous about the big kick-off and the weight of expectation on her shoulders.
Blues begin their campaign tonight against Bristol Academy at Stratford Town’s DCS Stadium (7.45pm).
“I do feel a big pressure, I’m not going to lie,” said the winger. “I’m really nervous.
‘‘There’s been a lot of media attention and all that stuff.
“But when I’m out there on the pitch I will just play my usual game. I have played in big games before so I will use my experience from the past and get on with it.”
Carney returned to these shores after two years in America playing for Chicago Red Stars.
The 23-year-old, from Hall Green, says she was keen to be near family and friends again after so long away.
She left Blues in 2006 and spent three seasons with Arsenal, winning every trophy on offer, before heading to the States.
But she admitted the draw of her home town and the FA Women’s Super League was great.
“I’m a big Birmingham fan and to play for them, to be a part of my local team in the next months and years in a new women’s era, is going to be fantastic,’’ she said.
