COLIN Doyle says Blues will approach Sunday’s crunch derby at home to Wolves in a positive manner.
Hefty back-to-back away defeats, at Chelsea and particularly the 5-0 mauling at Liverpool, won’t deter them from doing all they can to get the win that could effectively guarantee Premier League survival.
Doyle is on standby to start his first top-flight game since August 2007 because of injury to Ben Foster. He came on for Foster, who has thigh and back problems, just before half-time at Anfield.
And he says he would relish the opportunity and not be found wanting.
“It was a bad result and 5-0 is not good for our goal difference,” says the Irish international.
“We spoke about it in the dressing room and it was uncharacteristic from us, all the goals were soft. I think what happened was that we were chasing and chasing after going behind. We felt if we got a goal, we were still in it.
“But then, as we are chasing, you are always leaving yourself exposed at the back to them countering on you.
“Liverpool are a world-class team and they have some world-class players.
“To be honest, I’m not saying we should have shut up shop when we were losing 3-0, but maybe just said ‘right, ten, 15 minutes left, just play and don’t concede more goals’ and take things from there.
“It was our own fault, really, going gung-ho and losing the other two goals as well.
“We have just got to try and stay positive and have a good week in training, which I’m sure we will.
“Wolves is a massive game, but I don’t think it’s the be-all and end-all because we still have Newcastle away and Fulham at home.
“There’s still four games left in all. I’m not saying if we lose Sunday we will be all right, but there are still games there if something doesn’t go right.
“But I know the lads, they are strong enough mentally and have got it in them to put these last two defeats right. We will have a good week this week and hopefully do the business Sunday.”
