Birmingham City: Cameron Jerome says he has plenty to offer despite goal drought

Cameron Jerome

CAMERON Jerome has vowed to keep doing what’s required for the team – even if it means suffering the consequences.

Jerome has not scored a goal in 19 Premier League starts for Blues.

But that bald statistic does not totally paint the picture of his contribution for Alex McLeish and the cause.

Jerome has been a regular pick due to the fact he has remained fit, committed and brings pace and muscular power to a side that isn’t the most dynamic, nor the most creative.

Last season Jerome became only the second Blues player to hit double figures (11 goals) in the Premier League era since Mikael Forssell’s stellar 17-goal campaign in 2003-04.

But he only has three this term, and the last time he netted was at Stoke City in November.

Jerome has been aware of certain grumbles from some fans, but said he would continue to put himself forward to help Blues secure Premier League status.

“All I know is that the manager appreciates what I do, the boys in the dressing room appreciate it and as for other people, well that’s up to them,” he told the Birmingham Mail.

“That’s no real concern of mine. My job is to do what I do for the team. The manager and the lads appreciate it massively, and that’s fine by me.

“I try to chip in with all sorts when I can and I know we’re not the most attacking team, so I’m not going to get chances galore, like the sort other teams might create.

“That’s not our forté; we are more defensively resilient and quite hard to beat. We nick goals here and there, and that’s just how we have to play at the moment.

“Yes, it would be nice to be getting loads of chances every week but that’s not the case.

“Sometimes you’ve just got to add other strings to your bow, which I feel I have been doing.

“ I think my all-round game has improved a hell of a lot and I’m a handful for any defender. No defender in this league likes playing against me.

“If we could get a few more chances to come my way then that would be great, and I’m sure we would be all right.

“But it’s just a case of making sure we get the points on the board we need now and, if we do, then we can regroup and reflect that we’ve had a good season and look at things that way.”
