Birmingham City: Chris Hughton on the decision not to re-sign Stuart Parnaby

Stuart Parnaby

BLUES have stated it was a ‘club decision’ not to proceed with the signing of Stuart Parnaby.

The defender was left fuming after the plug was pulled following a short trial period.

Parnaby, a free agent after his release by Blues at last season’s end, said he had agreed a contract and passed a medical.

But on Friday afternoon he was called in to see manager Chris Hughton and told there had been a change of heart.

Hughton said: “We took a look at Stuart in training because he’s a good player who has served this club very well.

“It was a club decision not to proceed with a contract and we, of course, wish Stuart well with the next chapter in his career.

“He is an excellent professional and we thank him for his contribution to Birmingham City over the last few years.”

On his Twitter feed, Parnaby announced he had agreed personal terms and passed a medical and that he would have ‘loved’ to have returned.

Whether the reason Blues did a U-turn was due to the club’s money woes and ordered from upon high has not been verified.

And Hughton has adopted a stance of collective responsibility given his comments.

Hughton has said he would like to sign two or three more players, via the loan market, and it could be that it was decided available funds had to go elsewhere.

Jonathan Spector went to right-back in Stephen Carr’s absence at Manchester City in the Carling Cup last week and it was also perhaps considered he would remain the alternative there.
