Birmingham City: Curtis Davies urges teammates to make extra games count

CURTIS Davies has urged Blues to start making their games in hand count to muscle in on the Championship promotion race.

Tomorrow Blues entertain Leeds United at St Andrew’s in one of their outstanding fixtures and the centre-half said it represented a great opportunity for Chris Hughton’s men.

Blues’ Europa League involvement has caused a stack of rearrangements and should Blues win their games in hand they would jump into the play-off zone.

“Getting into the top six is a possibility – that’s if we ever catch up on the games,” smiled Davies. “We have got Sunday, midweek, Sunday, midweek or Saturday, midweek all the way to the New Year.

“It will be interesting. You have to go and win them. But we have no better opportunity than Leeds at home on Wednesday to get the ball rolling and strike one off the list.

“Our home form has been good. We have only conceded one goal and dropped two points. So you would like to think we would get a win.

“But you can never take Leeds for granted. They are a strong team. They will bring a load of fans down and hopefully it will be a good game.”

Blues have posted five straight wins in league and Europe.

Davies said that naturally confidence was high, but it was all about maintaining current standards.

Blues are no longer a soft touch away from home.

The win at Nottingham Forest was their first since February, when Alex McLeish’s side looked as if they would not slide into a Premier League relegation scrap.

“That was the problem at the beginning this season,” said Davies.

“We were winning all our home games but going away and losing, despite getting the first goal.
