Birmingham City admits Blues made life difficult for themselves against Burnley

CHRIS Hughton stated that Birmingham City's spirit got them through a testing encounter against Burnley.

Chris Burke’s added-time goal nabbed a vital 2-1 victory that revived Blues stalled Championship promotion charge.

It had appeared that Blues would endure frustration and drop another two points after going ahead and failing to put their opponents to the sword.

That's what happened on Saturday when Peterborough United escaped St Andrew's with a 1-1 draw.

But Burke popped up dramatically to clinch a victory that moved Blues into eighth place in the table, just two points from the play-off zone with games in hand.

Hughton said: “We left it very late but the plus to take from it is the fact there is a lot of spirit in the camp and they are a determined group of players.

“We certainly didn’t make life as easy for ourselves as we should have done, but I was very happy with some of our offensive play.

“We just need to make sure we start working the opposition goalkeeper more than we are doing at the moment.”

Jean Beausejour fired Blues ahead in the second minute against a Burnley side that had lost three on the spin.

“We got off to a very good start and played well against a very good team, a young team with a lot of energy," said Hughton.

“We just need to be a little bit more clinical."

Burke said that Blues merited their success.

And he saluted the combinations that set up the decisive moment in the first minute of stoppage-time.
