BLUES suffered back-to-back league defeats for the first time this season after an undeserved defeat at the KC Stadium.
Birthday boy Chris Wood had put the visitors ahead in the first half but Hull turned the game on it’s head with second-half strikes from Robert Koren and Aaron Mclean.
Boaz Myhill was at fault for Mclean’s winner as he was beaten at his near post on his first return to the KC Stadium since leaving last July but Blues had enough chances to salvage at least a draw.
Ironically it was current Hull stopper, Peter Gulacsi, who pulled off a series of fine saves, despite Myhill getting the loudest cheer of the night from the home fans.
Hughton made three changes to the side that were beaten 1-0 at Cardiff City last week, one enforced and two tactical.
Pablo Ibanez deputised for Curtis Davies who completed a one-match ban, and both Wood and Wade Elliott came in for Nikola Zigic and Jean Beausejour who was rested.
Despite a slow start Blues were the first to threaten.
Wood rose the highest to fire a powerful header at Gulacsi from Elliott’s corner but it was turned around the post.
Hull then started to dominate possession and Cameron Stewart looked lively on the left wing.
It was his neat pass that set up Koren for the Tigers’ first chance at goal on 11 minutes.
The former Albion midfielder, who scored a late winner last weekend against Leicester, couldn’t repeat his fine goal on this occasion though as it was easily saved by Boaz Myhill.
Unlike Marlon King who was booed and taunted throughout by the home supporters, Myhill received a round of applause on his first return to the KC Stadium after departing in July last year.
He had to be alert early in the game even if he wasn’t forced into a save.
On 14 minutes James Chester went close with a downward header before Corry Evans smashed a volley inches wide.
Two minutes later Matty Fryatt fired into the side netting after racing on to a Koren throughball before Blues had a great chance to break the deadlock.
A sublime ball from Chris Burke found Elliott in the box and the ex-Burnley man tried to slide it under Gulacsi but it was saved by the Hull keeper.
At the other end Stewart had the beating of Stephen Carr on almost every attack and after cutting inside past the veteran right-back he lashed a low drive towards goal which Myhill almost fumbled.
