STEVEN Caldwell has urged Blues’ squad to be ready, willing, able – and mentally tough.
Blues lose Guirane N’Daw to Senegal’s African Nations Cup campaign at the weekend, a player who has come to prominence with his recent form.
But Caldwell insisted Blues could cope with his absence as there were others in Chris Hughton’s squad desperate to be involved.
But they had to step up to the plate, said the experienced defender, who has captained Blues in Stephen Carr’s injury absence.
“Guirane’s done well,” Caldwell said. “He took a bit of time to get his fitness and stuff, but he’s done well in the last few games. We’re disappointed to lose him, of course, but we have got able bodies there, guys who are chpmping at the bit for a chance.
“And this is where your
squad comes into play and people stand up and are counted.
“Wade Elliott has been left out recently and I think he’s an exceptional player. He’s been unlucky to be left out, but this is when people have to be mentally tough and ready for their chance, whenever it may be.
“Nathan Redmond has come on and taken his chance in the last couple of games, Chris Wood, Pablo is there too.
“We have got an exceptional but small squad and we just need to make sure that everybody is utilised to their full potential.”
Blues take a break from Championship action on Saturday when Wolves visit in the FA Cup.
For both sides their league commitments are of greater importance, but Caldwell said Blues would not take the third-round tie lightly.
“It’s a big game, on television, a derby against a Premier League team,” Caldwell mused.
