Birmingham City: Chris Hughton to step up player hunt as Jean Beausejour Wigan exit nears

Birmingham City winger Jean Beausejour was today discussing personal terms with Wigan Athletic after the clubs agreed a fee for the player.

And if the Chilean international completes a move to the Premier League strugglers it will leave St Andrew’s boss Chris Hughton scouring the loan market for a replacement.

The Blues boss is already on the lookout for a striker but will now turn his attentions to the wide left area as well.

Hughton has used both Nathan Redmond and Wade Elliott on the flank in place of Beausejour this season.

But he is bound to seek a loanee to increase his alternatives.

Blues agreed a fee with Wigan for Beausejour yesterday and the 27-year-old headed to the north west for talks and a medical.

Both clubs refused to disclose how much, but it is thought that Blues were after an initial £2.5-3

million for Beausejour, plus add-ons.

They signed him from Mexican side Club America for around £3.3 million in August, 2010 and they have made it clear these past weeks that no player will leave St Andrew’s unless their valuation is met.

Albion’s offer, of around £1 million, for defender Liam Ridgewell was rejected last week.

And the speed at which a deal was done in this case suggests that Wigan came straight in with the asking price.

Wigan tried to get Beausejour right at the death in the summer transfer window.

He was keen to leave then, but once the campaign got underway settled down and admitted he was enjoying his football under Hughton’s charge.

Beausejour has always been selected in what could be deemed as Hughton’s first choice XI.
