Chris Hughton was left with a double dose of frustration, despite Birmingham City's resounding win at Leeds United.

Hughton failed in his attempt to snare new players on transfer deadline day just hours before his side's Elland Road demolition job.

Peter Lovenkrands and then Stephen Dobbie were targeted for loan moves, but neither came off.

Hughton could still yet try again in a week's time when Championship clubs can resume trading on emergency loans.

But he was keen to bolster his striking options ideally on longer loan agreements yesterday.

Newcastle United were prepared to let Lovenkrands leave, but it is understood that the forward opted against the move.

And Swansea City wanted cash for Dobbie, who has fallen down the pecking order since their promotion to the Premier League.

Hughton had stressed well before deadline day that loans were the likely route for him.
