Birmingham City: Chris Hughton gives trial to former Manchester United player

Birmingham City manager Chris Hughton has stated he is not yet any closer to breakthroughs over loan signings.

And he has invited another striker for a trial period – Danny Webber.

The 30-year-old was released by Portsmouth in the summer after two seasons dogged by injury.

The former Watford and Sheffield United forward has been seeking to get fixed up ever since and yesterday clocked in at Wast Hills to start training with Blues.

Hughton has also been casting his eye over another free agent, former Hull City striker Caleb Folan, 29.

He said he couldn’t provide a timescale on when a decision would be made about Folan, who left MLS side Colorado Rapids at the start of the month.

“Although he’s physically in good shape, he hasn’t played so many games in the last couple of months. We just need to get a feel of where he is. We couldn’t be working any harder than we are,” added Hughton, referring to his loan hunt.

“When you’re looking to bring in loans they’re not your players and you’re reliant on other clubs releasing players or looking for

opportunities for them to get games.

“The search continues. It has been difficult but I’m probably in the same position as an awful lot more managers.

“But what I am really delighted with is the group of lads I’ve got here and what they’re giving me – they couldn’t be giving me any more than they are.”
