Frain is feeling High ‘n’ mighty

HIGHGATE United celebrated a red-letter day when they secured their first ever victory in the Aspire Midland Alliance.

They beat Bridgnorth Town this week by a highly entertaining 5-3 margin with manager Peter Frain insisting: “It was only a matter of time before this success came, so I don’t think anyone at Highgate was that surprised.

“I was more disappointed with the fact we conceded three goals in the second.

“We were 4-0 up at half-time and I think some of the lads took their foot off the pedal for a while.”

Chris Gumery continued his goal-glut, netting a hat-trick against Bridgnorth, after banging home both goals in Highgate’s 2-1 FA Vase win over Oldbury United.

Frain revealed: “I used to coach Chris when he was eight years old. He’s got what it takes to become a complete all-round centre forward.

“Some people raised a few eyebrows when I brought Chris in ahead of Tom Thacker. Now Chris is currently on fire and I’ve challenged him to keep on scoring.”

Frain is keeping his feet firmly on the ground and claimed: “Everyone has to be sensible. We’re not going to win the league, but we’re capable of doing well.”

No-nonsense Frain admitted he’d ruffled a few feather at Highgate this season.

However, he insisted: “I gave everyone who helped get Highgate promoted a fair crack of the whip, but I saw the need to make changes.

“Some people have been disappointed, with Lee Brosnan leaving the club because he wasn’t getting into the side.

“It’s a crying shame, but that’s progression. I honestly hope that Lee will stay in the game and I’d be happy to help him get fixed up with another club.”
