Simple for Simon to put Brakes on his career

FORMER Redditch United central defender Simon Rea had a rare outing for Leamington this week in the Birmingham Senior Cup.

One-time Peterborough United player Rea featured in a much-changed Brakes line-up that beat Studley 1-0.

Brakes boss Jason Cadden confirmed: “Simon got in touch with me out of the blue this summer and asked if he could come pre-season training with us.

“He lives locally in Leamington and I was happy for him to join in.

“Simon’s been training with us for the past six weeks and needs to get himself fitter. But I thought I’d give him a game against Studley and he played for 80 minutes. I didn’t think he’d last that long.

“He’s had a few problems with his shins over the years, but I still think he’s got a few more years football in him yet!

Cadden made a total of nine changes against Studley, which included seasoned shotstopper Richard Anstiss in goal, while long-serving Josh Blake was made skipper for the night.

Leamington take on Stourport Swifts today looking to make it seven straight wins in the BGB Southern Midland Division.

But Cadden warned: “While we’re top of the pile, everybody will be wanting to gun us down.”

AFC Telford will be attempting to create a little bit of history this afternoon when they entertain Corby Town in the FA Cup.

Assistant manager Larry Chambers confirmed: “Ever since the club was reformed as AFC Telford, we have always gone out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle.

“When you consider the great cup tradition that the former Telford United enjoyed, it’s something we need to put right and we’ll be looking to buck the trend against Corby.”
