Nick Wright call-up shows talent in non-Leagues, say Tamworth

Nick Wright

TAMWORTH believe Nick Wright’s international call-up has proved the growing quality of players outside non-League’s top tier.

Wright, who had initially been on standby for the England C match in Italy, was included on the bench in the 2-2 draw which booked the Three Lions’ place in the International Trophy final. They will face Belgium next February.

Scott Rickards was the only other player to make a Lambs appearance for the national non-League side, playing two games in 2003-04, though Scott Stamps has also featured in a squad without playing.

Lambs management duo Gary Mills and Darron Gee say Wright’s form has merited his chance with England but they also believe it shows his team-mates and other players in the Blue Square North that they will not be overlooked if they possess the talent.

“It’s fantastic for Wrighty - he deserves his chance,” said assistant manager Gee. “He has put in some unbelievable performances for Tamworth and hopefully it won’t be his last call-up.

“It’s great for the club and for the Conference North to have representation in the England squad. It shows it’s not a closed shop and that players in the Blue Square North or South will not go unnoticed. There are some fantastic players at this level.”

The table-topping Lambs, who today travel to Yorkshire side Leeds United, have bid farewell to keeper Will Puddy. The youngster has returned to Cheltenham Town after his loan.
