Sean Cunningham quits Willenhall Town after phone and travel expenses are slashed

SEAN Cunnington parted company with Willenhall Town this week following their 7-1 reverse against Unibond One South title favourites Glapwell Town.

Both Cunnington and his assistant Paul Tomlinson chose to resign after the club informed them they’d be cutting their travelling and phone expenses.

Cunnington had already been operating all season without a playing budget after Willenhall went into administration during the summer.

He confirmed: “The future doesn’t look particularly rosy at the moment and there was talk of Willenhall dropping down two or three divisions.

“Every week, there was a mountain to climb just to get a team out. Then to be told they don’t really want to be at Unibond One level is particularly demoralising. I just couldn’t see a way forward.

“I don’t think people realise the amount of hard work that goes on, the number of miles you travel and the phone calls made each week. It was our decision to resign – but I wish the club every success.

“Both Paul and myself gave it 110 per cent. Some of the players stayed loyal at the start, but then they were getting other offers and left. I couldn’t blame them.

“However, both Paul and myself remain very focused and we want to get back involved again as quickly as possible.

“We’ll be out watching games and keeping in touch until something else comes along.

“As a partnership, I still feel we’ve got a great deal to offer. In the meantime we remain positive.”
