Romulus challenged to become cup heroes

ROMULUS have been challenged to become cup heroes by reaching the first of two possible cup final dates.

Joint manager Richard Evans admits the Roms have struggled in cup competitions in recent years but this term they have reached two county cup semi-finals.

They entertain Alvechurch on Tuesday in the Birmingham Senior Cup semis after the Birmingham County FA insisted the tie against the Midland Alliance side take precedence over a planned Zamaretto Midlands clash against Bedworth. And the Roms also travel to Rushall Olympic for their Walsall Senior Cup last-four tie on April 27.

“We don’t normally do well in the cups but this year we’ve now got the chance of two finals,” said Evans. “This year, I think we’ve got a better side and a bigger squad.

“We won’t be taking anything for granted. We will be the favourites against Alvechurch but that doesn’t matter. For us, every game is the same – you have to enjoy it and work hard.”

The Roms are also hoping for another piece of history by pushing for a top-eight place in the Zamaretto Midlands, which would be their best-ever finish.

They had to settle for two draws over Easter, albeit provoking different reactions. They let slip a 2-0 lead against ground landlords Sutton Coldfield to draw 2-2 and had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Stourport Swifts, despite having eight players missing.

Evans expects Leo Brown, Marcus Brown, Tom Wilmore, Mykel Beckley and Matt Sergeant to return for today’s home fixture against Barton.
